Description

Report on Datasets Delivered from UBA to ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT) and ITMS M (DWD)

Contributors: Stefan Feigenspan, Theo Wernicke

Project Deliverable: Data set on GHG emissions (CO2, N2O, and CH4) of the sectors industry, energy, transport, agriculture, waste management and LULUCF based on NIR reporting used as a priori estimates by the following tasks of ITMS M (DWD).

Description:

The gridded emissions from Greta are provided using the triangular DWD grid (ICON53) and UTM32 grid with a resolution of 1x1 km². All anthropogenic emission sectors are included in the dataset like industry, energy, agriculture, transport, and waste. Sector codes are in GNFR format (and NFR) and available as .csv and netCDF files. The gridded datasets were produced with data exported and reformated from the ZSE (Zentrales System Emissionen) at UBA (based on submission 2024) and spatial distributed with the Greta tool (Version 1.5.4.6). In addition to the anthropogenic emissions, GHG emissions from LULUCF sectors provided by TI were included as an additional layer (GNFR N) for creating a comprehensive GHG emission map based on the reported German NIR.

Major differences in spatial emission distribution compared to the last data submission generated by Greta Version 1.2.0.1 are:

  • improved spatial distribution of emissions of national shipping

  • updated and improved distribution emissions of road transport

  • improved distribution of emission from agricultural sectors (based on TI data)

  • improved distribution of emissions from residential heating

  • included LULUCF emissions (GNFR N)

Description of the data package:

netCDF-Exports:

  • available for UTM32 grid for the years 2021 and 2022 (GNFR nomenclature)

csv-Exports:

  • available for UTM32 1x1 km² grid for the years 2021 and 2022 (GNFR nomenclature)

  • available for ICON53 grid for the years 2021 and 2022 (GNFR nomenclature)

ESRI-Filegeodatabase contains:

  • Emissions of point sources (PRTR) for the years 2021 and 2022 (including estimated vertical height (method described in this paper by Pregger and Friedrich: ‘Effective pollutant emission heights for atmospheric transport modelling based on real-world information.’ https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0269749108004466)

  • GIS Greta Layer in NFR / GNFR for UTM32 1x1km² grid for the years 2021 / 2022

  • GIS Greta Layer in NFR / GNFR for ICON53 grid for the years 2021 / 2022

The data set contains NFR Sectors 1, 2, and 5, provided by UBA and Sectors 3 and 4, provided by Thünen Institute. The Documentation for the Sectors 3 (Agriculture) and Sector 4 (LULUCF) is available here:

This dataset is part of the ITMS German a-priori Emission compilation v2 - 2024: https://itmsgermany.atlassian.net/l/cp/y4yciKys

Purpose of Deliverable

Information on the spatial distribution of emissions is important to answer a number of questions in the field of air quality monitoring. Emission data is used to model the dispersion of air pollutants or to visualize the structure of the spatial distribution of emissions. These models show if abatement strategies were successful. For this reason, an ESRI ArcGIS based software has been developed which allows the UBA, independently and on the basis of information generally available, to regularly generate regionalized emission datasets for the complete area of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Input Data (in case of data deliverable)

The data set contains Sectors 1, 2, and 5, provided by UBA and Sectors 3 and 4, provided by Thünen Institute Documentation for the Sectors 3 (Agriculture) and Sector 4 (LULUCF) is available here: https://itmsgermany.atlassian.net/l/cp/titvo7gP
