Description:
The Thünen Institute has supplied a range of datasets to ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT) and ITMS M.10 (DWD), both before and following the commencement of the ITMS project QS_I.2. The provided data can be categorized into three distinct levels:
Data delivered:
a-priori information for IMTMS M.10 regarding CH4 emissions from Land Use, Land Use Change & Forestry (Thünen | Land Use, Land Use Change & Forest Emission of Germany (LULUCF, Submission 2023, CRT Sector 4) | 📁 Reduced Dataset for DWD), and estimated methane emissions from artificial waters https://itmsgermany.atlassian.net/l/cp/Ni03Fz0f
LULUCF emissions and land use information, including supplementary parameters from the LULUCF submission 2023, used as model inputs for ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT) to compare ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT) model outputs
https://itmsgermany.atlassian.net/l/cp/7iP4f6pHNecessary Model input data for ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT), such as remote sensing data for agricultural land use (e.g., crop rotation, grassland management intensity), soil information (e.g., soil pH, soil texture, SOC content).
Partially available data: Requires a user license agreement; includes fertilizer and crop yield/area data or needs further refinements or the generation of user-defined maps. Preliminary versions with a coarse resolution are already available (e.g. fertilizer application on Nuts 2-Level). User License agreements are in preparation with the legal departments.
Data currently being sourced: These are datasets that are not yet available but are in the process of being acquired.
Although the first datasets were exchanged, KIT and TI are still in contact to exchange further datasets used as model input.
Further activities within this deliverable were aimed at data management. This is to enable a smooth data transfer and bridge the time until the DKRZ proposal for computing time and storage is granted. The Thünen Institute provides a local repository at the Thünen Nextcloud. This system ensures secure and accessible data management.
Data Descriptions and Data Access
A complete list of datasets, including metadata, was shared between Thünen and ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT) and other Q&S partners can be found in the ITMS-Q&S Activity Database: ITMS Internal Data
Metadata and descriptions of Thünen LULUCF and the preliminary Methane Emissions from Inland Waters are linked below.
Overview of Key Datasets Provided by the Thünen Institute:
Thünen LULUCF (Submission 2023):
The first dataset delivered (D-QS.2.1) was under use restrictions and was labelled as confidential. It includes CH4, CO2, N2O, and NH3 emissions from sources covered by the German agriculture sector's National Inventory emission reporting 2023 (Submission 2023). Additional data encompasses land use and types, organic soil maps (with water-table depth), biomass, and other management data. The data, produced on a 100m x 100m grid, was initially provided as .csv database output to ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT) as model input, refined after internal user requirements discussion with ITMS M.X (DWD) to be produced and provided as a NetCDF file.

Methane (CH4) Emissions from natural Inland Waters:
This preliminary data, also under D-QS.2.1, is based on a national estimate, including uncertainty considerations.

Agricultural Land Use/Crop Rotation Dataset:
Comprising raster and vector data, this dataset includes various aspects of agricultural land use derived from remote sensing imagery (Sentinel-2 & Landsat 8), historical crop type maps (2017-2021), soil maps, planting/harvesting dates, and more. Additional datasets include soil maps (e.g., SOC), planting/harvesting days, grassland mowing dates, catch crops, etc., are currently in preparation and will be made available as soon as possible. A confidential dataset on crop yields and areas in Germany (1979-2021) at a harmonized district level. This data is spatially resolved to 397 districts with an average size of 900 km2 and include the crops summer barley, winter barley, grain maize, silage maize, oats, potatoes, winter rape, rye, sugarbeet, triticale, and winter wheat. The crop yield data covers about 9.5 million ha per year and 80% of Germany’s total arable land. The data set contains 211,292 data points. This dataset is also ready for delivery, subject to data-publication restrictions.
Soil Data:
Derived from the Bodenzustandserhebung (Soil Condition Survey), these datasets cover aspects like topsoil texture, organic soil, pH levels, and are available on Thünen Atlas as 1 sq. km gridded maps. Thünen and ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT) are exchanging about further aspects (e.g., stone content). Bulk density and hydraulic properties data, are still under processing, will also be derived from Bodenzustandserhebung using pedotransfer functions. SOC & N content/stock for agricultural land use has already been produced as a General-Purpose Map (relevant land use information mainly derived from ATKIS-DLM 2019).
Further maps dedicated to the internal user requirements of ITMS QS_I.4 (KIT) are under preparation.
Fertilizer (Nitrogen Input) Data:
Available from two main sources: N input at various administrative (National, Fedstate and district) levels from the Thünen agriculture emissions inventory and N application at the municipality level from the AGRUM-DE project.
Both include utilized agricultural area, N from mineral fertilizer application, N from symbiotic N fixation, N from seeds, N from animal manure application, N from sewage application, N from compost application, N from biogas digestate application, etc. While the data on the National, Fedstate, and district levels is already available, this dataset on the municipal level from the AGRUM-DE project is subject to data ownership and privacy restrictions, with a data license agreement in progress.
Forest Inventory Data:
Two categories of forest-related data have been delivered under D-QS.2.1. These include a stocked wooden floor map for 2018 and dominant tree species in Germany (2017/2018), both delivered in raster format and as maps. The woodland area covered by wood across Germany covers 10,962,638.95 hectares i.e., mapped area is 0.45% (97,80.91 hectares). The map is based on the classes AX_Forest, AX_Sumpf, AX_Moor of the Basis DLM 2018, as well as the products High-Resolution Layer Tree Cover Density 2015/2018 and Feature Additional Support Layer 2018.
Additional data constitutes spatially explicit and detailed information on tree species composition across Germany. This was produced based on Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1 and environmental data (including information on topography, meteorology, and climate) from the two years 2017 and 2018. In addition to the above, biomass data exists but is currently inaccessible due to privacy concerns.
